The Soundtrack of Costa Rica: What the Rainforest Sounds Like After Dark

Some evenings, the best chapter isn’t the one you’re reading. It’s the one unfolding just beyond the open windows, where the river, frogs, and rainforest quietly welcome another night in Costa Rica.

A guest relaxing with a book at sunset inside Pond House as the sounds of the Costa Rican rainforest begin to fill the evening air.

There is a moment every evening when Costa Rica begins to change.

The last rays of sunlight disappear behind the trees.

The day’s warmth begins to soften.

The birds settle into the canopy.

For just a few minutes…

everything feels still.

Then, almost without warning…

the rainforest begins its nightly performance.

Not loudly.

Not all at once.

One sound joins another.

The steady flow of the Río Damitas below.

The rhythmic chorus of tree frogs hidden among the leaves.

The gentle rustling of palms moving in the evening breeze.

The distant flutter of wings returning to the forest.

It isn’t silence.

It’s something far more beautiful.

It’s the soundtrack of Costa Rica.

Turn Off the Air Conditioning. Turn On Costa Rica.

One of our favorite pieces of advice for guests visiting during the green season is surprisingly simple.

Turn off the air conditioning.

Open the windows and doors.

Let the rainforest do the rest.

Instead of sleeping to the gentle hum of a machine, you’ll drift off to something no speaker could ever recreate.

The river flowing below.

The evening chorus of frogs.

Leaves dancing in the breeze.

Rain tapping softly across the roof.

Nature’s own white noise.

It’s one of those experiences that guests rarely expect…

and almost always remember.

As Evening Arrives…

The sun falls…

The softly lit jungle sets the mood.

The birds begin settling into the trees.

Butterflies disappear for the night after spending the day fluttering through the gardens.

The river becomes easier to hear.

The air changes.

After Dark…

Now the frogs begin.

The insects create layers of sound.

The breeze moves through the palms.

Occasionally…

a gecko announces itself from somewhere inside the outdoor living space.

You smile.

Because after a day or two…

even those sounds begin to feel familiar.

During Green Season…

Rain arrives.

Not always.

But often.

Sometimes softly.

Sometimes dramatically.

The rainforest comes alive.

The river grows stronger.

The smell of fresh rain fills the air.

Many guests tell us this becomes their favorite soundtrack of the entire trip.

Just Before Sunrise…

The rainforest slowly begins waking again.

Birds greet the morning one by one.

If you’re lucky…

you may spot squirrel monkeys making their way through the trees.

A heron quietly glides over the river.

Perhaps a sloth is still tucked high in the canopy, preparing for another peaceful day.

The rainforest doesn’t wake with an alarm clock.

It wakes naturally.

Why Natural Sounds Help Us Relax

Researchers have found that natural soundscapes—such as flowing water, birdsong, and gentle rainfall—can help reduce stress, restore attention, and promote a greater sense of calm. Many people find that these sounds are easier to relax to than the constant background noise of cities or electronic devices.

At White Noise, guests often tell us that after a few nights, they don’t miss the silence they expected—they miss the soundtrack of the rainforest when they return home.

Maybe That’s Why We Called It White Noise.

Because long before we built a retreat…

the rainforest had already created the perfect soundtrack.

One that asks nothing of you.

One that cannot be downloaded.

One that changes every evening.

One that reminds you that sometimes the most beautiful sounds in the world aren’t made by people at all.

They’ve been playing here all along.
